Pedro Albizu Campos Commemoration Initiative at Harvard University

It’s time for either Harvard Law School, Harvard College, or both to commemorate the legacy of one of Harvard University’s most famous Puerto Rican graduates, Pedro Albizu Campos (1893–1965). Interest in Albizu and his student years at Harvard University is among the most highly sought-after by Harvard students and the community. It’s time for Harvard to place a memorial bust, plaque, or other permanent feature on Harvard University grounds as a remembrance of a distinguished and revered Harvard University graduate and historical legacy for the Puerto Rican community.

Albizu is honored as the most contemporary patriot of the independence movement for Puerto Rico, and his global legacy resembles that of Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, Augusto Cesar Sandino, and Simon Bolivar. Over one hundred years ago, Albizu graduated from Harvard College (1916) and Harvard Law School (1923). The University of Vermont, which Albizu attended for one year before transferring to Harvard College, annually confers the Pedro Albizu Campos Award for Excellence in Latin American and Caribbean Studies to an outstanding student. We believe it’s time for Harvard University, from where Albizu obtained his two degrees, to honor his legacy as well.
